Violin

Ah Young Kim was born in Daejeon, South Korea. She began violin and piano at the age of 4.

She was accepted into the prestigious Young Jae Music Academy at Daejeon Art Center, and, at the age of 14, made her solo début performing Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole with Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra. She studied with Paul Pilkyun Kim, Min Jeong Kim, and Hae Yup Yang.

Kim has also participated and performed in various festivals in Europe such as Euro Music Festival in Austria and Germany (2013), Music Fest Perugia in Italy (2014), and Verbier Festival (2018 and 2019). While participating, she performed many chamber and solo concerts including their final concert with orchestra conducted by Uri Segal. She was invited to participate in the Pacific Music Festival in 2020; unfortunately, it was cancelled due to COVID-19.

Prior to joining the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Kim was a section violinist at the Quebec Symphony Orchestra (2022/23). Other orchestral engagements include the Institute for Orchestral Studies of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Canadian Opera Company’s Orchestra Academy, the Principal Second Violin of Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra, and Verbier Festival Orchestra.

Kim completed the Artist Diploma Program and received a bachelor’s degree from the Glenn Gould School in Toronto where she studied with Atis Bankas and Peter Seminovs.
