Gustavo Gimeno conducting Visions of Spain

Media High Notes: April 2023

May 16, 2023

From previews to reviews to interviews and more, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra regularly receives interesting and insightful media coverage from a wide variety of sources. Here’s a summary of our most recent and notable press:

Conceived and led by Barrett Principal Education Conductor & Community Ambassador Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser, Reggae Roots was one of the most talked-about concerts of our season to date. The groundbreaking program, the performance by guest vocalist Jah’Mila, and our début in Brampton were previewed in print (by Jen McNeely for Shedoesthecity, Paul Junor of Toronto Caribbean, and Ann Marie Collymore for ByBlacks.com), on the radio (by CBC’s Metro Morning), on TV (by CBC Saturday News), and online (by VIBE 105).

“The TSO under the direction of Gustavo Gimeno captivated Toronto for four days,” said Toronto Hispano’s Lina Rodríguez of our Visions of Spain concert, which, according to Leslie Barcza of barczalog, saw the Orchestra “fearlessly undertaking works of the last century.” La Scena Musicale’s Paul E. Robinson added that the featured side-by-side performance with the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra elicited “first-rate playing from old and young musicians alike.”

Our performances of Mahler 5 under the baton of longtime friend of the TSO John Storgårds also earned enthusiastic praise, with Jeremy Gee of the Toronto Guardian calling them “arguably the highlight of the Toronto spring classical season.”
