David Longenecker

Double Bass

TSYO Alumni

Bassist Dave Longenecker has enjoyed performing with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, where he has been a member for 26 years. In addition to the TSO, Dave also enjoys performing in musicals around Toronto, and at the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, as well as performing background music in commercials and movies, and playing gospel music and jazz.

The bass that Dave plays on is approximately 240 years old. It was previously owned by the legendary jazz bassist, Ray Brown, and was bought for Ray as a present from his wife at that time: Ella Fitzgerald. It was on this instrument that Ray Brown made a name for himself while defining the sound of the jazz double bass—playing it on many recordings of the time, including all of the Oscar Peterson Trio recordings.
