“The Art and the Business Have to Work Together”
TSO Music Director Gustavo Gimeno and Chief Executive Officer Mark Williams regularly take part in one-on-one interviews. It’s an important part of their jobs, and one they enjoy greatly. But when they’re given the opportunity to sit down together to answer questions, it’s a rare treat—as proven by their recent appearance on TVO’s The Agenda.
In the annual music show, which aired on December 20, our leaders’ harmonious dynamic was put on full display, as host (and longtime TSO subscriber!) Steve Paikin engaged the TSO’s “two top musical minds” in a thoughtfully detailed conversation. In fact, Mark described the importance of this collaborative relationship during the conversation: “The art and the business have to work together,” he said. “If either one of them becomes dominant and the other is subordinate, I think that it sends an orchestra in the wrong direction…. We have to compromise, and we equally have skin in the game for success. I think that makes good sense.”
