Angelina Sievers
Japanese-American violist Angelina Sievers is an up-and-coming solo, chamber, and orchestral violist. Her recent achievements include First Place in Open Strings at the 2024 Ontario Music Festivals Association (OMFA) Provincial Competition; First and Second Place in Open Chamber at the 2024 OMFA Provincial Competition, placing first with the Top H.A.T. Trio and second with Quartet Armonico; Second Place in the 2023 Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition; and an Associate Diploma from The Royal Conservatory of Music as a 2023 graduate.
Sievers has played in numerous orchestras across North America, including the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra (2024–present); the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra (2019–2024), where she served as co-principal for three years; the National Youth Orchestra of Canada (2022); the Kindred Spirits Orchestra in Markham, Ontario (2016–2019); and the Suzuki method summer program string orchestras in Minnesota, New York, and Ontario (2014–2019).
Sievers made her solo début with the Canadian Sinfonietta in March 2024 as a winner of the 2023 Unionville Music Competition, and has received many accolades for her solo performances. These include top-three finishes at the OMFA Provincial and Pickering GTA Competitions (2016–2024), the Unionville Music Competition Bach Trophy (2019), the Piastro Most Promising Violist Award at the International Music Festival and Competition in Markham (2019), and recognition as a Royal Conservatory of Music gold medalist (2015 and 2019).
A recipient of the Shepherd Society Award and the Rice Grant, Sievers is currently studying under Professor Ivo-Jan van der Werff at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston, Texas, for her Bachelor of Music degree. Sievers previously studied with Theresa Rudolph at the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists as a recipient of the Temerty Foundation Scholarships (2021–2024), and with Wendy Seravalle-Smith at the Thornhill School of Suzuki String Teaching (2013–2021). Her other mentors include Larry Beckwith, Marko Dreher, Ivan Ivanovich, Min-Jeong Koh, Simon Rivard, Barry Shiffman, Ben Smith, Sheila Vandikas, and Paul Widner, and she has played for numerous violists in master classes and lessons, including Caroline Coade, Rivka Golani, Keith Hamm, Juan-Miguel Hernandez, Máté Szücs, Steven Tenenbom, Marina Thibeault, and Roland Vamos. As a former student of the Suzuki method and the arts program at Unionville High School in Markham, Sievers is a strong advocate for the accessibility of music education for children and youth.
About the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra
For 50 seasons, the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra (TSYO) has been dedicated to providing a high-level orchestral experience for talented young musicians aged 22 and under. The tuition-free TSYO program delivers a unique, powerful, and life-enriching opportunity that encourages significant achievement, regardless of participants' chosen career paths. The TSYO is closely affiliated with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO): TSO musicians serve as coaches through the season, TSO guest artists lead masterclasses for TSYO members, and the TSYO performs annually with the TSO in a side-by-side concert.
The Youth Orchestra has toured extensively within Canada and abroad. Tour destinations have included Banff, British Columbia, the Canadian Arctic, Quebec, Texas, Massachusetts, California, Japan, and Europe.
