“Orchestral music is such a powerful way to connect with people. This concert for newcomers and volunteers at the YMCA of Greater Toronto was a true celebration of the power we have as musicians to build and strengthen communities,” said Simon Rivard, RBC Resident Conductor.
The concert was part of the TSO’s ongoing partnership with the YMCA of Greater Toronto, which also includes virtual performances and mentorship for youth. Participants in the YMCA’s Newcomer Program and the YMCA Academy were invited to attend the performance.
“It was an opportunity to have my children to learn more about music in general, and give them an appreciation for music,” said Monica, a parent of two children in the YMCA Academy.
The concert featured repertoire from classical and contemporary composers including award-winning Canadian-Sri Lankan composer Dinuk Wijeratne. The performances were received enthusiastically by the crowd.
"Listening to TSO perform felt very normal to us for the first time, and we finally had the chance to engage with the Canadian community after struggling with settlement and the pandemic. It was an unforgettable musical event with the spirit of peace, joy and love,” said Silva Zokian, who recently arrived in Canada from Iraq.
“It has been a great pleasure so far to be part of the loving community YMCA and I believe that many other people are enjoying their services as much as I do," Zokian said.
