On November 22, 2024, TSO violinist Yolanda Bruno took her instrument to a unique stage: the patient lounge on the 15th floor of the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre’s (PMCC) Malignant Hematology Inpatient Unit and Outpatient Clinic.

Symphony for the Soul is a new collaboration between the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and PMCC. This ongoing, free series—made possible by generous donors like you—brings live music to PMCC patients, enhancing their emotional, social, and spiritual well-being during their care journey.

“A musician who’s coming into a more public space and performing… can actually shift the ambiance and environment in a really significant way that is very different from my clinical role which is at the bedside… The more music, the more art in health care the better for the patient, family, caregiver, and staff experience.”
—Dr. SarahRose Black, Music Therapist, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre

The environment in which cancer care, research, and education take place profoundly impacts the well-being of patients, families, and healthcare providers. As part of the University Health Network (UHN) Cancer Experience Program, Symphony for the Soul will also contribute to research on the therapeutic effects of music in cancer care communities.

This season, eight Symphony for the Soul concerts are planned, featuring calming and uplifting live music for patients and their families. Thanks to you, we can provide comfort, connection, and support through music—just when it’s needed most.
