Thanks to your support, the TSO’s Relaxed Performances have become a vital part of each season—bringing the joy of live orchestral music to audiences who may not feel comfortable in traditional concert settings.

Since the first Relaxed Performance in 2019, led by Barrett Principal Education Conductor Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser, donor generosity has helped grow this initiative into an annual series featuring both Young People’s Concerts (YPC) and Masterworks programs.

Created especially for neurodiverse and disability communities—as well as anyone seeking a more welcoming, less formal concert experience—Relaxed Performances offer a safe space to engage with music on one’s own terms. Audience members are free to move around, vocalize, wear sound-dampening headphones, or take a break in quiet areas, with performance elements adjusted to prioritize comfort and inclusion.

“If, for any reason, you or your family are hesitant to attend a concert,” said Daniel at that first performance, “this is the place for you. This is the time for you. And our entire series of Relaxed Performances is for you.”

Since then, feedback from audience members has been deeply moving. One parent shared, “My son can be himself during the concert… These concerts have greatly enhanced and contributed to his and our family’s quality of life.”

Because of you, the TSO can reaffirm its commitment to accessibility, ensuring that music remains a source of connection, joy, and belonging—for everyone.
