A native of Philadelphia, violist Gary Labovitz joined the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in the fall of 1973 shortly after graduating from the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. Since that time his life has been filled with music and family. He has 4 children: Jenny, Jesse, Nellie and Reuben. Gary regularly plays chamber music with his two teenage children, Nellie on violin and Reuben on cello. As well as his activities in the TSO he maintains a teaching studio and is a faculty member of the Miles Nadaljcc Suzuki program.
Following an injury in 1988, Gary began the study of the Alexander Technique. In 2005 Gary began the process towards certification by entering the teacher training programme at the Toronto School of the Alexander Technique. Now an intern with four students, Gary will receive his Teacher's Certificate in 2010 after completion of the required 1600 hours of class time.
