Audrey Good

Audrey Good

Hometown: Champaign, Illinois

Instrument (s): French horn

Age you began playing: 10

Year you joined the TSO: 2011

Who or what inspired you most to play your instrument? My mother always loved the sound of the French horn.  I decided that I did too, after hearing Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf as a child at a local Kinderconcert.

Does your instrument have a story?  I have a very hard-to-find instrument made by Dan Rauch who makes horns in Norway.  He is about to retire, and I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to buy one of his horns before he stops producing them.

What other ensembles have you played with/do you play with?  I play in a horn quartet called the Four Hornsmen of the Apocalypse. I’m thankful for this chamber group because it allows me to hone skills that are specific to small ensemble playing.  It is a wonderful complement to orchestral playing and allows me to travel the world and meet so many other horn players!

What is your favourite music to play?  Anything by Prokofiev

Who are your favourite musicians in any genre? When I’m not playing the French horn, I prefer to listen to something wildly different.  I don’t listen to a lot of classical music in my off time—I love classic rock!

What is your most memorable concert experience as an audience member?  When I was in high school, I got to see the Chicago Symphony Orchestra play Brahms Symphony No. 4.  It was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard—I still get goose bumps when I remember it.

What three recordings (of any genre) would you want to have with you on a desert island?  Led Zeppelin, In Through the Out Door; Def Leppard, Hysteria; Bob Dylan, Blood on the Tracks
