Why We Give: Cathy Clark
Cathy Clark has been attending Toronto Symphony Orchestra concerts for more than three decades. We asked her: What do you love most about the TSO, and what inspired you to become a donor?
Cathy: What I love most about the TSO is how community-focused they are, and how hard they work to engage people. I love that they offer performances for children and neurodivergent patrons. I admire their partnerships with high schools and how they mentor young musicians through the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra.
Another thing that keeps us coming back is the connection we feel to the musicians. They don’t know us personally, but we feel as though we know them. When we look at the program and notice who’s playing, or see a new face in the clarinet section, it feels like greeting old friends. Over the years, my husband and I have attended some really innovative concerts that are exciting, as well as classic masterworks that are just as vibrant. I always hear something new, even in a piece I’ve known for years.
Like most donors, we don’t give millions, but we’ve given monthly for years. This not only adds up, but it also provides a stable source of support for our TSO. It makes us feel like we’re part of the orchestra’s community impact. It means a great deal to see an orchestra that looks outward—to the city, to the next generation, and to its supporters. I also appreciate how deeply the TSO cares for its community of donors. Open Rehearsals, Backstage Tours, and the dedication of staff, board members, trustees, and supporters—all of those things make the TSO truly special, not JUST the concerts.
