The Power of Music: Connection, Expression and Well-Being at Amica
At Amica Senior Lifestyles, music is fundamental to how we create environments where people feel connected, engaged and well. It is thoughtfully integrated into daily life across our residences, not as an occasional activity, but as a meaningful and consistent presence. Through live performance, shared experiences and interactive programming, music enriches the rhythm of each day and contributes to a sense of belonging that is central to quality of life.
For our residents, these experiences go beyond enjoyment. Music brings people together, encourages participation and strengthens community. Whether listening or taking part, residents are invited to engage in ways that feel natural, comfortable and rewarding.
“Music has a unique ability to help people feel seen and connected,” says Ashley Sumler, Amica’s Director, Quality of Life. “It creates opportunities for expression and engagement that span ages, abilities and experience.”
This perspective informs how programming is designed at Amica. Music is presented in a range of formats that reflect the diverse interests and experiences of residents. Classical ensembles, jazz musicians and culturally specific performances are complemented by interactive formats that encourage conversation, movement and shared participation. Residents also enjoy special experiences such as music by candlelight concerts, which create an intimate and immersive setting for live performance. Together, these moments support emotional well-being and social connection in a way that feels both purposeful and intuitive.
Our commitment to music is also reflected in our support of organizations that enrich the cultural life of our communities. We are proud to support the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, whose performances inspire audiences of all ages. Their dedication to artistic excellence and accessibility reflects our shared belief that music should remain a meaningful part of life at every stage.
Innovation in Dementia Care: The CRDL
As part of our ongoing investment in quality of life, Amica has introduced the Cognitive Resource and Discovery Lab (CRDL), a sculptural musical instrument designed for people to play together through touch and presence. Residents, families and team members gather around it, place their hands on its surface and create sound collectively.
The design is intuitive and welcoming. There are no instructions to follow and no musical background required. The CRDL responds to touch by generating tones and ambient soundscapes, allowing multiple people to participate at once. This makes it especially meaningful for residents living with dementia, offering a way to engage, express themselves and connect with others without relying on words or memory.
“The CRDL is about creating meaningful engagement in the moment,” says Ashley Sumler. “It’s not about learning something new or performing. It’s about offering an experience that feels natural and responsive.”
Because it can be enjoyed simultaneously, the CRDL creates a shared musical experience that feels immediate and inclusive. Families can participate alongside loved ones, team members can join and residents can experience a sense of connection simply by being present and engaged.
“Even in later stages of dementia, the ability to respond to sound and rhythm often remains,” Ashley says. “Music gives us a way to connect that still feels meaningful. We’ll often see residents drawn in, whether they’re watching someone else or hearing the music. Before long, they’re part of it too, sharing the moment together. The smiles and connection we see are the kinds of moments that stay with you.”
Music as a Lifelong Connector
Music continues to resonate across all stages of aging. A familiar melody can prompt someone to sing along, tap their foot or reflect on a meaningful life experience. In these moments, music becomes a powerful connector, linking past and present while reinforcing a sense of identity and belonging.
At Amica, these experiences are intentional. They reflect a broader approach that recognizes well-being as multifaceted. Music supports emotional health, cognitive engagement and social connection, while creating opportunities for joy and self-expression each day.
By combining evidence-informed practices with creativity and care, we create environments where residents feel supported, engaged and at ease. Music plays a central role in that experience, offering connection in ways that are both personal and shared.
