From early experiences living across continents to a career that began in federal politics before shifting into real estate, Kuo Yin has built her life around connection — across cultures, industries, and communities.

Her decision to join the Gala Committee was rooted in a belief in music’s power to unite. “When all of us come together as a community, we can create a bigger impact,” she says. “We need this kind of positive unity, especially in the world we are living in right now.”

Noteworthy: What makes a night at the symphony different for you?

Kuo Yin: The standards at the TSO are impeccable—the stage, the performance, the energy, the music, the musicians and staff members that work tirelessly day and night to present perfectionism to every single audience. I’m always amazed by the diverse and inclusive cultures that have been expressed by the music selections at the TSO. Of course, I might be a little biased, but I think it’s the best cultural experience in Canada.

NW: Why is reaching younger audiences important?

KY: It is important for us to bring in the younger generations into the classical music scene now more than ever. In order to make classical music more inclusive, accessible, welcoming, and approachable for all ages, we have to open our doors and hearts to the younger generation. I’m proud to be here to represent the new generations, and to introduce the classical music scene to more people in my age to enjoy the beauty of music together.

NW: Did music play a role in your life growing up?

KY: Growing up, I remember my parents would play a variety of music on the radio in the morning. I think that’s where I learned that the beauty of arts and music can be found everywhere — it is in your everyday life. I was lucky enough that my parents were very supportive in giving me opportunities to explore different kinds of instruments, but I never practiced anything consistently enough to play well. However, not knowing how to play instruments or draw on a canvas never impacted my personal interests in arts and music—especially with my further involvement in philanthropy.

For Kuo, Gala night is a celebration of beauty, craft, and community—an opportunity to share music’s impact with friends old and new. She will be wearing a dress designed by two TMU students who have recently graduated from the fashion and design program. “The beauty of arts and music can be found everywhere,” she says, “but here, it takes centre stage.”
