Noteworthy: How do family traditions shape your Lunar New Year celebrations?
Madelyn Chung: Lunar New Year is a time for our family to get together and share delicious food. We typically eat poon choi (盆菜), a traditional Cantonese dish layered with ingredients like seafood, meats and veggies. It's meant to symbolize abundance and togetherness. A newer tradition of our family, which I always look forward to, is dressing up our dogs in lion dance costumes and having them "perform" a lion dance while we hold lettuce on a chopstick (with some cheese hidden in there).
NW: How does Lunar New Year bring communities together, and what role does it play in your own connection to the city?
MC: Over the past few years, I've been able to connect more with the Asian community in Toronto thanks to Lunar New Year celebrations around the city. It's been a good way for me to learn about the different LNY traditions, as well as connect over the similarities (particularly the superstitions!).
NW: Why is it important to you to support the TSO and help shape the TSO’s Lunar New Year Celebration?
MC: Music has played a big role in my life from a very young age and it's a beautiful way to share culture and bring communities together through a universal language. For the past few years, the TSO's Lunar New Year celebration has been one that I've looked forward to and it's a joy and an honour to be a part of this year's event.
