Meet Douglas & Gail Todgham

April 23, 2025

The TSO has a generous and engaged group of donors who have celebrated the orchestra and its work for decades. The community of support is so meaningful to the musicians, our Music Director, Gustavo Gimeno, the TSO Board of Directors, and the TSO staff.

Please enjoy, in their own words, some TSO highlights from long-time subscribers and supporters Douglas and Gail Todgham.

A TSO subscription has been a highlight of the Todgham calendar since 1969, when we married. We first sat in the same row as Managing Director Walter Homburger, with Seiji Ozawa as conductor. Moving to Roy Thomson Hall in 1982, we were again seated near the Managing Director, surrounded by significant patrons such as Mary and Tom Beck. We thought it was pretty special to have retained these excellent seats as “mere” subscribers!

A couple of years later, in October of 1984, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip attended a Royal Gala at Roy Thomson Hall during their visit to celebrate Toronto’s 150th Anniversary. They were seated in our very seats!

Over our 56 years of TSO attendance, each conductor has brought their particular focus to the programming, with lesser-known composers and TSO commissions adding a new element to certain concerts.

We have shared many memorable moments, with guest artists or favourite classics on the program. Two that stand out: the programming the TSO produced for viewing on Zoom during the long days (and nights) of COVID-19 was creative and inspirational. The introduction of “O Canada” this past March brought the audience together for a joyful and proud moment of patriotism.

Arts and culture are an essential component of what makes Toronto great. With our recent gift, we hope to assist Gustavo and the TSO in continuing to build the orchestra with the very best artists. Live performance is a major focus in our life. We support what matters to us.
