Celebrating Dedication: A Special Evening with the TSO’s Honorary Governors
October 30, 2024A symphony orchestra simply cannot exist without the thoughtful and sustained support of individuals who believe in its mission, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra is certainly no exception. So we were privileged to show our appreciation to our Honorary Governors—passionate advocates who have all supported us for years—with a dedicated evening at Roy Thomson Hall, recognizing the pivotal role these philanthropic leaders play in the TSO’s enduring legacy and future.
As the evening unfolded, the spotlight turned to Tom Smee, the newly appointed Chair of the TSO Board of Directors. In his address, Tom emphasized the profound impact of the Honorary Governors on the orchestra’s journey. “I find it inspiring to recognize that we are all part of an unbroken chain, going back over 100 years, of people who in every era have deeply loved and believed in the TSO and all that it does to inspire and uplift the people of Toronto,” he said. “I could not be more excited to continue to build on the successes of this institution and to help it thrive. I look forward to working with all of you and hope I can count on you for your support in this new role.”
Mark Williams, the TSO’s Beck Family CEO, followed with a recap of our extraordinary 2023/24 season, celebrating milestones that included record-breaking attendance at events and significant community engagement. “The successes of the past year are because of your legacy,” he declared. “The TSO’s successes are your successes, and I look forward to celebrating many more with you as we nurture and support this great institution, together.”
As guests enjoyed the drinks and dinner, they were joined by a company of TSO musicians, including Eri Kosaka (Principal Second Violin), James Wallenberg (Violin), Lucia Ticho (Cello), and Ah Young Kim (Violin), who joined in the conversation.
A highlight of the evening was the surprise appearance of former TSO Music Director Jukka-Pekka Saraste, who reminisced with attendees and enjoyed a charming story recounted by Honorary Governors’ Circle Co-Chair Bob Corcoran about the time Saraste signed his music-themed tie from the Vienna Opera House.
In a world where music unites, the Honorary Governors stand as vital ambassadors, ensuring that the TSO continues to inspire and uplift its communities for generations to come. As Tom Smee poignantly reminded everyone, “Together, we can help the TSO thrive, now and in the future.”
