Ever wondered how TSO Music Director Gustavo Gimeno approaches the TSO's Spotlight Artist program? Here’s the secret to its success
October 29, 2025

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) is no stranger to visiting artists, talented global performers who whisk into town, dazzle crowds and are gone in the blink of an eye. These visits are magical, but often leave patrons itching for more. That’s why the Symphony’s Spotlight Artist program, which is generously supported by Zenovia Zmiyiwsky, invites two prolific soloists per year to forge a deeper relationship between them, TSO musicians and the city itself by taking part in two special performances and community engagements over the course of the season.

“I think of them as contrasting personalities,” says TSO Music Director Gustavo Gimeno of his approach to choosing artists. “Maybe two different instruments, or a singer and an instrumentalist, often from different origins.”

Planning up to two years in advance, Gimeno takes into account each musician’s personality, artistry and the qualities that will “shine on stage,” looking to balance a familiar name with a brand new one. This year’s artists are perfect examples of this dynamic: violinist Joshua Bell and Canadian pianist Bruce Liu will join the TSO over the season for performances spanning from conducting to solos.

And, unique to the TSO’s program, both Bell and Liu will engage with the community, too, lending their expertise and experiences to development-focused programs like the TSYO side-by-side concert and on the upcoming European Tour.

The program is a hit, something Gimeno chalks up to its ability to offer patrons a sense of discovery and kinship. “In a relatively short time, audiences see an artist in multiple contexts and feel closer to them—not just musically, but personally,” he says. “It goes beyond artistry; it’s about feeling connected to someone you admire and wanting to see.
