November 2018 at the TSO: Mozart, Ravel, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Britten War Requiem

The month of November at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) begins with The Mozart Experience (a pair of delightful family concerts) and ushers in the holiday season with Tchaikovsky for the Holidays. In between, the TSO offers much-loved music by Beethoven, John Adams, and Ravel—in a program entitled Boléro—and presents the poignant Britten War Requiem, coinciding with the centennial of Armistice Day.

The TSO announces $2.3 million surplus

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) held its Annual General Meeting today, announcing that the TSO ended the 2018 fiscal year with a surplus of $2.3 million. Board Chair Catherine Beck and Chief Executive Officer Matthew Loden outlined a series of initiatives over the past year that have focused the institution’s forward momentum, bringing new financial stability and artistic vitality to the TSO.

Toronto Symphony Orchestra Announces Gustavo Gimeno as Next Music Director

New Chapter Ahead for One of North America's Foremost Symphony Orchestras

Toronto Symphony Orchestra Board Chair Catherine Beck and Chief Executive Officer Matthew Loden today announced that Spanish conductor Gustavo Gimeno will become the Orchestra’s 11th Music Director beginning in 2020/21, the Orchestra’s 99th season.

TSO and Sir Andrew Davis launch 2018/19 season with Symphonie Fantastique

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO), led by Sir Andrew Davis—Interim Artistic Director—embarks on its 97th season on Thursday, September 20 at Roy Thomson Hall. The opening concert highlights the Orchestra through the music of Berlioz: the epic Symphonie Fantastique, and the lesser-known Fantasy on Shakespeare’s The Tempest, featuring the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir. Both works will be recorded live by Chandos Records for future release.

Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada today announced the Emerging Arts Critics (EAC) programme will expand in the 2018/19 season to include the Canadian Opera Company (COC) joining as collaborators with The National Ballet of Canada and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO).

Emilie LeBel joins the TSO as Affiliate Composer

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) and Interim Artistic Director Sir Andrew Davis proudly announce that Canadian composer Emilie LeBel has been selected as the TSO’s new Affiliate Composer. Described as having a “deft compositional hand, unwilling to hurry ideas,” and a style that is “impressively subtle and sensuous,” Emilie LeBel specializes in concert-music composition focusing on textural landscapes, resonance, and variances in colour.

Jon Kimura Parker steps in for Jean‑Yves Thibaudet

It is with great regret that, due to unforeseen circumstances, Jean-Yves Thibaudet has cancelled his appearances with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) this week. He wishes his friends and colleagues the very best for the end of their season, with congratulations to Peter Oundjian for a remarkable tenure as TSO Music Director.
