Jordan Pal Joins the TSO as RBC Affiliate Composer

September 29, 2015

September 29, 2015: The Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s Music Director, Peter Oundjian, proudly announces that Canadian composer Jordan Pal, whose music is described as “evocative,” and “genuinely compelling” (Concertonet.com), has been selected as the TSO’s RBC Affiliate Composer. In this role, Jordan Pal will be fully integrated into all areas of the organization, with full access to the inner workings of a major symphony orchestra. Earlier this year, the TSO had an open call for applications that was met with an overwhelming response. A highly sought-after position, this two-year residency fosters the development of artists and represents an important investment in the Canadian arts community. Jordan Pal succeeds Kevin Lau, who held the position of RBC Affiliate Composer with the TSO from September 2012 to August 2015, and who is now pursuing a successful career.

“Congratulations to Jordan Pal for achieving this honour at this early stage in his promising career,” said George Lewis, Group Head, RBC Wealth Management & RBC Insurance. “RBC is committed to supporting emerging talent in Canada and this program provides the opportunity for emerging composers to work with some of the best in the Canadian orchestral world.”

“Jordan is an extremely gifted composer with a tremendous sense of drama and intensity,” says Peter Oundjian. “He is also a great communicator, and a talented and entertaining public speaker. I am thrilled to have Jordan as a part of the TSO’s artistic team.”

As the TSO’s RBC Affiliate Composer, Jordan Pal will work closely with Peter Oundjian, Composer Advisor Gary Kulesha, and the artistic staff of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. During his term with the TSO, Jordan will compose at least two works for the Orchestra. His first work will première in June 2016. He will also participate in educational work with young audiences in the TSO’s community-outreach programs.

With performances of his works by the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, National Arts Centre Orchestra, Orchestre symphonique de Québec, Gryphon Trio, St. Lawrence String Quartet, and more in the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons, Jordan Pal has emerged as one of Canada’s most exciting new composers. His work, praised as “full of colour and emotion,” “beautifully crafted” (American Record Guide), and displaying a “clear sense of craft and expression” and “skilled orchestration,” has been lauded by audiences, critics, and leading industry professionals.

Described as “one to watch” (La Presse), Toronto-born Pal is considered a leading voice of his generation in the Canadian concert-music scene. An award-winning composer, he has been commissioned and performed by many of Canada’s finest orchestras and ensembles. Pal was the National Youth Orchestra of Canada’s 2014 RBC Composer-in-Residence, and, in 2014, he was selected as one of three finalists across all artistic disciplines for the prestigious Toronto Arts Foundation’s Emerging Artist Award. He holds a doctorate degree in composition from the University of Toronto. Mr. Pal gratefully acknowledges the support of those who believe in the importance of sustaining this great tradition.

The RBC Resident Conductor (a position currently held by Earl Lee) and RBC Affiliate Composer are part of the RBC Emerging Artists Program, supported by the RBC Foundation. These positions have been supported in part by the Canada Council for the Arts.
