The masterful Karen Gomyo performs Prokofiev’s First Violin Concerto—once described by famed violinist Joseph Szigeti as a “mixture of fairy-tale naïveté and daring savagery.” Sir Andrew Davis closes out the concert by conducting Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony, which contains a short and violent scherzo that is reputedly a musical portrait of Stalin.
