Tchaikovsky’s “Pathétique”, his profoundly moving final symphony, expresses life’s beauty and sorrow with an eloquence that is unmatched. Conducted by Gustavo Gimeno, this concert also features the world première of I Want to Be Alive—Trilogy for Orchestra, a powerful exploration of human vitality by Icelandic composer Daníel Bjarnason. Together, these works create a compelling narrative about the human experience, from our innermost struggles to our most uplifting moments.

Enhance your concert experience by arriving early for a special performance by members of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra. A pre-concert performance will take place in the North Lobby at 7:15pm and is included with your ticket to the Wednesday, May 7 concert.

Take Five: Inside Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique

Tchaikovsky’s “Pathétique” is one of the most beautiful Romantic symphonies, frequently used in popular culture. You’ve likely heard it in movies such as Anna Karenina (1997), Minority Report, and The Aviator. This Sixth Symphony is aptly named since “pathétique” means “passionate” and “emotional,” and it is a powerful exploration of human emotions, from joy and triumph to deep sadness.
