Danny DeVito is one of the entertainment industry’s most versatile players, excelling as actor, director, and producer. The Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner is known for his roles in television series Taxi and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and has starred in more than 70 movies such as One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Terms of Endearment, Romancing the Stone, Twins, Ruthless People, and Tin Men.
In 1996 DeVito produced, directed, and acted in Matilda, a film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1988 classic children’s novel of the same name. He served as the Narrator and played Matilda’s father in the film. DeVito was inspired to bring the story of the beloved family classic to the screen when his children brought home the book from school and expressed their love for it. On March 22, 2024, he narrated a live version of the film alongside the New Jersey Symphony, led by David Newman conducting his iconic score, while the film played on screen to thousands of fans at the State Theatre New Jersey.
Last year DeVito reunited with friend and former co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Super Bowl commercial for State Farm, and again onstage presenting together at the 96th Academy Awards. He was most recently seen in Chris Pine’s directorial début, Poolman.
The multi-faceted actor was nominated for a Tony Award for his Broadway début in 2017 in Arthur Miller’s The Price. He won Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards for the role. In 2012 he received rave reviews in the London West End revival of Neil Simon’s comedy The Sunshine Boys. In 2013 DeVito reprised his role in Los Angeles. In 2023 he returned to Broadway alongside his daughter, Lucy DeVito, in I Need That, the première of an original play by Theresa Rebeck.
A principal of Jersey Films 2nd Avenue, successor company of Jersey Films, DeVito produced Erin Brockovich, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, Pulp Fiction, Out of Sight, Freedom Writers, Garden State, Along Came Polly, Living Out Loud, and others.
DeVito served as a producer and co-starred in Get Shorty, Man on the Moon, Be Cool, Even Money, and Drowning Mona. DeVito directed and acted in films that include The War of the Roses, Death to Smoochy, Throw Momma from the Train, Curmudgeons, Duplex, The Ratings Game, and The World’s Greatest Lover. He produced, directed, and acted for Matilda, Hoffa, and Curmudgeons.
David Newman is one of today’s most accomplished creators of music for film. In his 30-year career he has scored more than 110 films, ranging from War of the Roses, Matilda, Bowfinger, and Heathers, to the more recent Girls Trip, Night School, and Serenity. His music has brought to life the critically acclaimed dramas Brokedown Palace and Hoffa; comedies such as Galaxy Quest and Throw Momma from the Train; and the award-winning animated films Ice Age, The Brave Little Toaster, and Anastasia. He holds an Academy Award nomination for his score to Anastasia.
In 2021, after a decade of conducting numerous live-music-to-film concerts for the classic West Side Story film, Newman arranged the score for Steven Spielberg’s bold new reimagining of the legendary Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim musical, earning him a GRAMMY® nomination in 2022.
As a highly sought-after conductor, Newman appears with leading orchestras throughout the world including the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, San Diego Symphony, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, and Cleveland Orchestra. In fall 2017, Newman conducted the world première of John Williams’s epic film series Star Wars—Episodes IV, V, VI, and VII—with the New York Philharmonic. In summer 2020, he conducted the world première of his score for the film Galaxy Quest live with the San Diego Symphony during Comic-Con, and in fall 2021, he was invited by the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles to conduct their inaugural concerts of The Wizard of Oz, live to picture, with the American Youth Symphony.
The creation and conducting of music has been a lifelong zeal for Newman, who is the son of nine-time Oscar-winning composer Alfred Newman. An active composer for the concert hall, he has composed works that have been performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Indianapolis Symphony, and Long Beach Symphony, as well as at the Ravinia Festival, Spoleto Festival USA, and Chicago’s Grant Park Music Festival. He also composed a suite for violin and orchestra for prodigious Korean-American violinist Sarah Chang based on the songs from West Side Story.
Passionate about nurturing the next generation of musicians, Newman has served on the faculty of the Aspen Music Festival in the Film Scoring Program.
Newman is married to wife Krystyna and is the father of two girls, Diana and stepdaughter Brianne.
