New Year’s in Spain
To celebrate the new year, Gustavo Gimeno shares a program of crowd pleasers infused with the colour and flair of his native Spain. Rodrigo’s ever-popular Concierto de Aranjuez transcended the classical realm through Miles Davis’s cover, and, in these concerts, you’ll hear it performed by one of the greatest Spanish flamenco guitarists in the world today. Filled with rhythmic verve that will leave you dancing, Falla’s suite makes for a jubilant and flashy finale. And no New Year’s party is complete without a little Johann Strauss II.
Join us for a post-concert event in the lobby following the Saturday performance!
A Note from Gustavo Gimeno
“In my first season with the TSO, I wanted to present a Spanish program, but one that was designed in a unique and unexpected way. In this concert, we’ll hear classic works by Spanish composers like Falla and Rodrigo, but also portraits of Spain as seen through the eyes of composers from other countries, along with music by a contemporary Spanish composer. This variety will allow us to experience Spanish music from multiple angles and viewpoints.”
