Born in Vancouver, Ivan Alexander spent his youth overseas. From an early age, he demonstrated musical ability. He joined the Victoria Symphony at the age of sixteen, and later supported his studies by performing with the Hamilton Philharmonic. His principle teachers were both Canadians, Sydney Humphreys in Victoria Symphony and Steven Staryk in Toronto. In addition, numerous individuals have assisted in his development.
Mr. Alexander joined the first violin section of the TSO in 1981. He continued to develop his playing by working with Joseph Silverstein (Boston), and Viktor Liberman (Amsterdam). Mr. Alexander has performed many concerts over the years in recital and as soloist, including CBC Radio broadcasts and television appearances.
Musical development has also included extensive conducting studies, notably with Jiri Belohlavek in Prague and elsewhere. He has conducted orchestras across Canada and in prominent venues in Europe.
Mr. Alexander acknowledges with appreciation the invaluable contribution of the Victoria Conservatory of Music, the Banff School of the Arts, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, and the Canada Council.
As well as ongoing personal studies over the years, he has taught many students at all levels, and adjudicates for Music Festivals across Canada. Another supporting role Mr. Alexander has developed is consulting to individuals, organizations and businesses in Mission Definition, Communications, Structure, and Vision Objectives.
Mr. Alexander's violin was made by the 20th century Hungarian master, Paul Ernst Pilat, and his bow in 19th century Paris, by Mathias Theophile Auguste Barbe.
His other passions include reading, writing, art, travelling, languages, gourmet cooking and fine wines, scuba diving, skiing, and yoga. Another pastime is playing with his kindred titian, Nova Scotia duck-tolling retriever "Redwyn's Bonaventure de JURA" (Bonnie).
